Canadian citizenship test format: questions, time and online steps

Knowing the format removes some of the uncertainty. The official test checks knowledge of Canada, while the invitation and test-day instructions tell you exactly when and how to take it.

The format at a glance

  • 20 questions, in multiple-choice or true-or-false format.
  • 45 minutes to finish; you need at least 15 correct answers to pass.
  • The test is available in English or French. Its questions come from Discover Canada.
  • Most applicants who were 18 to 54 when they signed their application must take the test, unless an exception or waiver applies.

What happens before an online test?

IRCC invites most applicants to take the test online. Your invitation gives you a 30-day period in which to take it. You may have up to three chances during that period. Follow the dates and instructions in your own invitation; other test formats may be arranged for accommodations.

For the online test, have your application number, unique client identifier (UCI) and suitable photo identification ready. IRCC asks for photos of your ID and face. Use a quiet, well-lit place, a working webcam and a supported browser. Check the current IRCC online-test page before you start because technical requirements can change.

During and after the test

The online timer cannot be paused. IRCC says answers are submitted when time runs out. If your connection drops, the clock keeps running, so leave enough time to solve a technical issue.

You will see an immediate online score, but IRCC calls it unofficial until an officer reviews the result. Save the result page for your records. The official status can take longer to appear.

A useful rehearsal

Try our 20-question, 45-minute simulator once you have read the guide. Practise reading the full question, choosing an answer and moving on when you are unsure. Our questions are study material; they are not the questions IRCC will give you.
